Vacation Bible School is taking place here this week.
It’s funny, this seems nothing like a vacation to me…(insert comedic drum hit here)
I fully support the idea of VBS and reaching children on a fun and interesting level for Christ. What I DO NOT support is not preparing for an event.
ME: Alright, here we go…day 1 and no rehearsal with the emcee.
EMCEE: Welcome kids! Let’s get on our feet and sing Song X.
ME: Song X?!?! Crap…(spend 2 minutes getting DVD cued up to Song X)
EMCEE: Ok, I think we’re ready to sing!
(Singing.)
EMCEE: It looks like our friend Foxy (a puppet) is coming to see us.
(Play audio for Foxy I received 5 minutes before assembly.)
EMCEE(in front of group): Stop the feed. It’s playing all the way through. You need to stop it for each dialogue.
ME: I have no script. I have no script. I have no script
(Very off dialogue ensues.)
EMCEE: Now we have a word from Xtreme Jean.
(Fumble around to switch out disks and cue Xtreme Jean [also received 5 minutes ago]. Plays.)
EMCEE: Well kids, that was actually the last day’s episode of Xtreme Jean. We’re having some technical difficulties (shoots blaming look towards sound booth).
ME: …
What a week.

This is where I work.

This week has been nuts around the church.
I enjoy my job, but when that job turns into a seven day work week, I tend to get a little stressed.
This week has entailed all of my job responsibilities in a whirlwind of the old “one thing after another” routine. I’ve fixed projectors, ran mic cables, worked on mics, edited, filmed, updated web pages, troubleshot video signals. My brain is mush!!!
I struggle on weeks like this to recharge. To fill my spiritual, emotional and intellectual juices. I think that people who are on staff at churches are at a bit of a disadvantage. On Sunday mornings we aren’t fully invested like a member of the congregation because we have to worry about the flow and logistics of the service.
When I need to recharge, I will take one of my lunch breaks, lock myself in my office and usually watch an online sermon from Mr. Andy Stanley. Technology means that I can refill from the comfort of my desk chair.
Right now I definitely need to “plug in”.

Here at my church I have many names. With each name comes a different hat that I am expected to wear.
It’s quite entertaining to me that if you ask each person at our church who I am and what my title is, you will get several different answers. The reason I write this is that I have several friends who are in the same field and I would imagine they get some of the same titles as well. It’s always interesting to hear people’s account of who I am in relation to our church.
To the church, I am:
- the Multimedia Specialist (my actual title)
- the sound guy
- the web guy
- the video guy
- the media guy
- the tech guy
- the mac guy
- the power point operator
- the guy with the couch in his office
I don’t mind these titles. In fact, I embrace them and think they make the job more entertaining because I never know who I am going to be each day.
Despite my many titles, I love my job.
Who are you at your job? What hats (or titles) do you wear?
